Details: | SUMMARY: Source / GWUDI / treatment discussion DETAILS: Cynthia called because she is concerned that the source at Union Creek CG is a likely candidate for GWUDI. She described it as a dug well on a hillside, with an outlet pipe below static water level and below grade, going down the hill, like a spring (as it is classified in SDWIS). The creek is about 50 feet away. The source is currently chlorinated with contact time. There is no electricity at the treatment site or at the spring. Cynthia wants to be sure that the USFS can assure that the water is safe in the interim until they drill a new well. Though now the water meets regulations, since they suspect GWUDI, she was wondering how much additional treatment should be provided. We discussed the possibility of adding UV (they have some units with solar panels), with chlorine residual. They will also begin testing the raw water for coliforms (specials), and try to determine whether the static water level is above or below the level of the creek. We also discussed MPA testing, and she thought they might have to use a pump in order to get the right flow through the test filter, but I discouraged that, since it would change the hydraulic grade normally established in the aquifer when the spring is in normal use (gravity). She will look into all these issues and decide how to proceed. ACTION NEEDED: GWUDI testing in 2007, and a new well is planned for the site shortly after that. |
