Details: | SUMMARY: Asssitance with Water Quality Issues due to Hydrogen Sulfide DETAILS: Circuit Rider was contacted by Watseco-Barview Water District to provide assistance with elimination or reduction of sulfur smell in drinking water. The water district located just south of Rockaway Beach provides water to approximately 190 services. The water sources is a groundwater well. The operator treats the water with permanganate and sodium hypochlorite to reduce sulfur odor. Upon visiting the District, it was revealed the hydrogen sulfide odor was not present immediately after the treatment plant, but develops in dead-end water mains. As the water system was previously unfiltered. It was determined that there are likely H2S producing bacteria present in sediment at the bottom of some pipes. The evidence for this was further enhanced by the fact that the blow offs present on these lines were too small to provide adequate flushing. ACTION NEEDED: Actions Performed: Investigate possible causes and remedies for the hydrogen sulfide present in the water. Met with water district staff and board regarding possible solutions to the odor problem. Provided recommendations for replacement of undersized blow offs and adequate flushing procedures. Provide further assistance with completion of funding application. |
