Details: | SUMMARY: Assistance improving filter performance DETAILS: Milo Academy owns and operates a surface water treatment plant and distribution system that supplies water to homes, a boarding school, a church, and a business. The academy had initially requested help improving their treated water quality. Upon investigating the filter operation we noticed that the filter media was not in proper operating condition. After closer examination of the coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration process we arrived at the conclusion that the filter is not physically performing properly. Further investigation revealed that the anthracite in the filter has the consistency of shale, the surface wash system has been removed, and the filter is not coming clean through normal backwashes. We determined that the media level was correct and that no media has made it to clearwell, therefore the filter media was most likely intact. The next step was to have been core sampling, however after checking the cost of filter media we determined that it would not cost much more to rebuild the entire filter as opposed to merely replacing the anthracite. At this date the academy has purchased the filter media and is waiting for an opportunity to replace the media. ACTION NEEDED: Academy staff has requested technical assistance to replace the media. I will provide them with written material as well as onsite assistance when the media replacement takes place. |
