Details: SUMMARY: Difficulty maintaining Cl residuals DETAILS: Mr. Alvin contacted me for assistance maintaining consistent free Cl residuals. Free Cl residuals have ranged from ND>2.6 mg/L and total Cl residuals have ranged from 0.4>3.5 mg/L. Residuals typically measured at 3 sites in system and results can vary widely at sites daily. Cl is added right before the 3000 gal reservoir, then goes through 2 backwashable sand filters and finally out into distribution system. Very little is known about filters other than sand is the media. Age of sand is unknown. For the three years Mr. Alvin has been operating system no maintenance has been provided on filters. Cl residuals have been measured before and after sand filters. Mr. Alvin mixes 6-8 gal of 12.5% Cl in the 30 gal solution vat. 2 Stenner dosage pumps (max 17 gpd each) inject solution proportional to flow. Visited system May 17, collected Cl residuals at pump house tap prior to filters (2.2 plus mg/L free Cl). Total Cl at each site was >2.2 mg/L, which is the max for the digital Hach unit I used. I suspected that filtration unit was installed for iron and/or manganese removal and I recommended that he collect raw and treated water samples for both contaminants. High levels of one or both will have impact on maintaining Cl residuals. I also recommended collecting raw coliform samples monthly for one year to determine if chlorination is for oxidation or disinfection. I asked him to measure and record the free and total residuals daily at all 3 sites and to contact Schneider Well Drilling for info on filters (they supposedly analyzed filter media in the past). ACTION NEEDED: Revisit after iron and manganese levels are known. Prepare report identifying iron and manganese treatment systems. Wide discrepancy between free and total Cl residuals indicates interfering agent combining with Cl.
