Details: | SUMMARY: Update on Westport Water Association DETAILS: I spoke to Joell Archibald explaining to her that Westport Water Association had been placed on a boil water notice since the storm damage in December 2007 as a precautionary measure. Westport Water does have a connection to the Wauna/Taylorville water system, however, their source is not expected to keep up with peak summer demands for the two water systems. Although Wauna does add chlorine as a disinfectant, the residual is not high enough to carry through the extra distribution system of Westport. Calvin Shulda (operator for Westport Water) had been batch chlorinating Westports tank (water from Waun flows to the Westport tank) in order to keep up residuals, however, this is not possible during peak demands and was had to be discontinued during the recent heat spell. With an unrealiable supply and inconsistent chlorine residuals, the precautionary boil notice will remain in effect. Westports plan is to seek a merger with Wauna and to develop the Knapp spring (a spring currently not used by Wauna) to supply both systems. Boatwright Engineering is working on preliminary engineering to develop that spring and the two systems are working at gaining public support for the merger. It is not clear at this time if the merger will take place. ACTION NEEDED: Westport to remain on boil water notice until an alternative source is found or a merger is accomplished. |
