Details: | SUMMARY: Question on Disinfection Procedure DETAILS: Jim Stevenson called to clarify DHS disinfection instructions following maintenance of a 7,000 gallon storage tank (recoating inside of tank) and a waterline break (which resulted in loss of pressure in part of the distribution system). Amy had previously spoken with Jim and provided him the amounts of sodium hypochlorite to add. Jim had added the NaHC to the tank and then distributed it out throughout the distribution system and to each home. By doing so he had drained much of the tank and now was refilling the tank with water and NaHC. He wanted to know when the 24 hour contact time started. I told him at the time the refill was finished. He also wanted to know the extent of disinfection required in each household (toilets, water heaters, etc). I was unsure how to answer this - I suggested he test the water from the home adjacent to the water line break (a duplex) and the at least one house down-gradient from the duplex in his followup coliform testing. If these were negative, then he could flush the system and the consumers could use the water. In the meantime, users should drink bottled water or boil their water. I suggested he allow folks to use their toilets sparingly during the 24 hours (max 2 flushes per household) and not use other water (I.e., no showers, etc) until 24 hour time period was met and coliform negative test results. He concurred with this concept. The system does not routinely disinfect its water. ACTION NEEDED: None at this time. |
