Details: | SUMMARY: Reservoir disinfection procedure assistance DETAILS: Mark requested assistance on the procedures for disinfecting and putting into service a 100K gallon reservoir that had just been recoated with interior epoxy. Several questions/issues arose on how to disinfect the reservoir and what to do with the chlorinated water to prevent it from entering the environment and causing damage. Since the reservoir only has one common line it would be necessary to ensure that water only filled the reservoir during this process and the valuing configuration added difficulty to the procedure. The company that applied the coating would do it for $1500. The district initially did not want to pay for that service, thinking it would be cheaper to do it themselves. I met with Mark to evaluate the piping and valve arrangement and see how they intended to dispose of the chlorinated water after the procedure. They were improving the drainage ditches to direct the water into an open field below the reservoir that is privately owned. I discussed chlorination options. I then discussed piping/valve isolation for the 24 hour shock method and how to ensure no highly chlorinated water entered the system during high demand. A check would have to be installed in the bypass piping to prevent the chlorinated water from flowing back into the system. I also made several inquires into dechlorination chemicals and found sodium bisulfate for them to use on the discharge water. I contacted DWP and discussed the issue and what would be allowed. On my second trip to the system, Mark called me on the way and informed me that the district has decided to and have it done by the tank company. In my opinion electing to have it out sourced was a good idea as the company has the experience and equipment to conduct the procedure properly and effectively. ACTION NEEDED: None |
