Details: | SUMMARY: Toluene detection in new 6th street test well (PR#152-2007) DETAILS: I received a call from HGE, Inc. regarding the detection of Toluene of 0.0018 mg/l in a new test well located within 120 feet of the existing Well #1 (MARI5732, MARI5729). Steve wanted to know what the implications of the Toluene detection would be and if they could proceed with developing the well as a new water source. I told him that quarterly VOC monitoring would be required (regardless of the Toluene detection due to the new source plan review requirements) and future results would dictate if any treatment would be needed. I told him I could not comment on developing the well without consulting with Tom Charbonneau on the matter. Contact reports and data online indicate a history of toluene and tetrachloroethylene detections in the existing wells as well as inadequate construction with co-mingled aquifers identified for the existing 6th street well, which is believed to draw water from the same fractured basalt aquifer as the new test well. I contacted Kris Byrd with Water Resources Department (503-986-0851) to see if they had any issue with developing a new well 120-ft away which drew from the same aquifer as a co-mingled, inadequately constructed existing well. He said he would investigate the matter. ACTION NEEDED: Await further direction from Kris Byrd (WRD) Tom Charbonneau (DWP - Plan Review Engineer), Greg Baird (DWP - regional sanitarian for Marion County), and Greg DeBlase (Marion County HD). |
