Details: | SUMMARY: Office meeting re: proposed switch to soda ash DETAILS: With an eye towards changing his corrosion control treatment method, Jeff ordered new water quality parameter samples to be taken from the well at Fern Ridge Middle School and from the drinking water well at Elmira High/Elementary School. These results are in from the lab, and Jeff came to our Springfield DWP office to discuss where to go from here. We determined that his source water (at both schools) has a very high DIC (dissolved inorganic carbonate) level, so that caustic soda does seem to have an advantage over soda ash as a treatment method. The idea is to get the pH level between 7.8 and 8.2 without causing carbonate to precipitate out in the pipes (and cause scaling). We adjourned with several questions to research (below). ACTION NEEDED: 1. Jeff will take more pH samples at the well for each school.2. I will check to see if the states Circuit Rider program has been expanded to include assistance to NCNT water systems.3. I will check with Portland staff regarding high DIC and the use of soda ash versus Jeffs safety and cost concerns with the current caustic soda treatment.4. Check whether the EPAs lead/copper fixture replacement program for schools would apply to the situation with these schools. |
