Details: | SUMMARY: Blue Green Algae Bloom in Raw Water Reservoir DETAILS: I called Neil to follow-up about the blue green algae bloom in their raw water reservoir. Testing revealed the presence of Anabeana, but not toxins. Neil said the PAC was starting to address some of the taste and odor concerns and that he was in the process of investigating the use of an algicide. I referred Neil to Casey Lyon for further technical assistance and to Willy Hartwig from the City of Lowell for practical guideance in dealing with algal blooms. Weekly testing for Annatoxin-A and Microcystine-LR was also recommended, but not required. The City opted not to treat with an algicide to avoid the potential sudden release of toxins and will continue to treat with PAC for taste and odor until this bloom naturally dies off and seek solutions to mitigate future algal blooms. Various resources were recommended, including publications by the World Health Organization and the Harmful Algae Bloom Surveillance Program web site at www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/hab/resources_web_links.shtml. ACTION NEEDED: Treat for taste and odor as needed with PAC, let the current bloom die off naturall, and investigate ways to mitigate future algal blooms. | ||
