Details: | SUMMARY: Incident due to chemical mislabeling DETAILS: Jim called to discuss an incident that happened 7/9/10. Citys operator was transferring sodium hypochlorite from Cascade Columbia carboy to mixing tank. Chemical reaction with gas release took place, so building was vacated. An estimated 1 gallon of the chemical was transferred from carboy to tank before being shut off. Tank was still pumping small amounts to system (flow based). Chemical was citric acid, mixed approx 1 gal acid to 10 gals of sodium hypochlorite solution. Cascade Columbia carboy was mislabeled at their production facility. ACTION NEEDED: No additional action is needed. Amount of citric acid pumped from the day tank to the 500,000 gallon reservoir in the 5-10 minute time period would be negligible. System monitors pH downstream of reservoir, and pH was not affected. |
