Details: | SUMMARY: Response to toluene detection DETAILS: Spoke with Martin today regarding tolune detection of 0.0005 mg/L on 10/6/10. This follows a 0.0009 mg/L detection in August 2010. System has had periodic low level detections since fall of 2008. Martin thought toluene may be naturally occurring, and inquired as to the source. I followed up with DEQs Julie Harvey who researched that toluene could be contained in some of the forestry pesticides applied in this area-as per input from OSU Extension, and likely is not naturally occuring. DEQ also felt that road spraying could be a source-Martin indicated roads had not been sprayed recently. I communicated to Martin that drinking water protection assistance is available for outreach to homeowners in watershed regarding waste containment and home heating oil tank maintenance. ACTION NEEDED: System to take quarterly toluene samples at EP in Feb (first quarter) and May (second quarter) 2011, as required, since average of initial and confirmation sample is above detection limit of 0.0005 mg/L. DWP can then see seasonal variability and consider monitoring reduction. James to continue to research source of toluene with DEQ and communicate findings to Martin. | ||
