Details: SUMMARY: Discussed lead and copper compliance DETAILS: I called Hans Feige to inquire about lead and copper compliance at Olympic Forest Products. I stated that the water system is on my list for enforcement due to inaction following the exceedance of the lead action level in 2004. I stated that the system has been required to sample every six months since 2009 and that DWP has not received any sample results. Mr. Feige stated that he believes there have been samples collected in this period, but he said he would need to check his file. DWP also needs samples collected every six months until there is resolution to the lead level exceedance. Regarding public education, Mr. Feige stated that it was published in 2004 after the last exceedance and that he would provide DWP with a copy. I stated that DWP will need public education issued this year unless the situation is resolved quickly. Mr. Feige added that people do ot drink water from the system due to high iron resulting in poor taste. He also stated that the system pursued plumbing replacement several years ago and has replaced the fixtures resulting in the high lead. We discussed why sample results collected from near the entry point had levels of lead three times the action level on 7/1/2011 while tap-water samples were ND. Mr. Feige did not have an explanation for the enigmatic results, but we discussed the possibility of lead leaching from well construction components or pump components. I suggested thorough flushing of the well before the next samples are collected, and then sampling from both the wellhead and just before the water softener (which is where the last sample was collected). I requested an explanation of corrective action at the system so that we might avoid addressing the situation through enforcement. ACTION NEEDED: Await submission by Mr. Feige and decide in August whether to pursue enforcement.
