Details: | SUMMARY: Taste and odor problems DETAILS: Myrtle Point called for advice on addressing taste and odor (T&O) problems. The water has a musty, earthy smell. This is most likely geosmin and/or MIB from algae. The problem started last week. The operator on staff turned up pre- and post-chlorination in response to the problem. This did not resolve the T&O. Recommend stopping pre-chlorination, while maintaining or increasing post-chlorination. Collect a source sample for algae characterization (confirm absence/presence of blue-greens). May add granular activated carbon to the top of the filters, run only at night (e.g., 10 PM to 6 AM), backwash more often. Currently filters have only 1 foot of head loss (small) and look very clean. End-users could use GAC to reduce T&O. ACTION NEEDED: none |
