Details: SUMMARY: Water Treatment Issues DETAILS: The Dark Hollow Water Association is a small water system located in rural Jackson County outside of Medford with 15 services. Dark Hollow has 1 well system approximately 70 years old with an approximate depth of 440’. There is a 10,000-gal steel storage tank that is buried underground and operates on floats that sends a signal to a radio control system which in turn sends a signal to the well head indicating for pumps to turn “On”. There is a small outbuilding to the side of the tank that is equipped with electricity, fill and feed lines and the tank drain line. There is a meter located on the system feed line to track usage from the tank.Located near the well head is the well pump house which houses their chlorine system, UV light, lots of random piping of various sizes, an old venturi system and filter to help with sulfur smell, neither is working at this time. 3/8/17 - Met onsite with Jack Patterson, who gave a tour of the system. Jack indicated that there is a foul rotten egg and/ or sulfur smell in the water. Jack noted that this can be random at times but has been an issue throughout the past and is most notable after heavy rains or when the tank gets low and pump(s) have to run for a long period of time.We requested a water sample be taken and analyzed for contaminates. A sample report was provided by the association that was performed on December 12, 2016. Sulfate levels were 50.3 mg/ L. While the EPA exceedance level is 250 mg/L, the sulfate levels are likely the cause of the odor. Based on the information collected we recommended that a manganese greensand filtration system with a backwash option be integrated into the existing well pump house. ACTION NEEDED: None at this time.
