Details: | SUMMARY: nitrate levels greater than 10 ppm DETAILS: Jeffrey Langan informed Daniel Vaage that they have a nitrate problem from their groundwater source and that they need to do something about it ASAP. OHA’s website was consulted, and several nitrate readings over the MCL of 10 ppm were noted. The geography of the area shows a considerable amount of agriculture use land situated above the spring source, this could be a possible source of nitrates for the system. We have assessed the situation and are providing four possible solutions and estimates of cost.1. Drill a new well. The old well did not show any elevated levels of nitrates. A new well similar to the old well and connection to the system is estimated to cost $20,000.2. Connect to the City of The Dalles water system. Jeffrey Langan indicated that this could be done for $35,000. 3. Install a reverse osmosis filter. This would also require some means to likely sub-surface discharge the reject water and is estimated to cost $40,000.4. Install a nitrate reduction system. This is the most expensive option as the systems would have to be installed at each user. The system has approximately 81 users times $1,500 = $121,500. ACTION NEEDED: None. |
