Details: | SUMMARY: Follow up to OERS Spill Report #2017-3522 DETAILS: A gasoline tanker truck crash on Hwy 22 MP 64 Friday night 12/15/17 resulted in a gasoline spill into the Santiam River above Detroit Lake, amount unknown but potentially 11,000 gallons. DWS was notified the morning of Saturday 12/16/17 and attempted to contact the nearest downstream users to make sure they knew about the spill. The following Monday 12/18/17, DWS checked in with all downstream users to get a status update. Several systems decided to shut their intakes and run off storage/use other sources as a precaution. EPA tested for VOC’s/gasoline constituents at the four nearest intakes on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Results for all three rounds of sampling showed non-detects at all intakes. By Wednesday 12/20/17, all systems had resumed using their intakes. The intakes will not be sampled again unless triggered to sample in response to new information/data upstream indicating additional contamination threats to drinking water. ACTION NEEDED: EPA/DEQ believe it is unlikely the spill will impact public drinking water supplies downstream based on the location of the spill and the high energy of the Santiam river system which will volatilize many VOC’s. In addition, extensive efforts are underway to control and remove the source area of contamination. DWS will continue to monitor the situation, including the results of any additional sampling, and respond accordingly. |
