Details: | SUMMARY: Consumer complaints of too much chlorine in water DETAILS: This system recently began chlorinating with full plan review approval. They have had to make a few adjustments to the chlorine pump to get the residual to stabilize at the desired level of 0.2 ppm. On January 15 and 16 we received three separate complaints from tenants that the chlorine level was too high. They could smell it and the water tasted bad. I visited two of the residences and tested both free and combined chlorine. Free chlorine residual was only 0.06 ppm and combined was 0.07 ppm. I told them that this level was low. They agreed that they could not smell or taste it today, but insisted that it was really bad on the previous days. I told them that what I thought they were smelling was the combined chlorine or chloramines. The chlorine is probably working on organic material in the reservoir and in the pipes. I told them to contact me again if they experienced the same high levels again. I told them that I thought it would get better, but if it doesn’t, the reservoir may need cleaning and the lines flushed out. ACTION NEEDED: Monitor chlorine levels and flush lines if necessary. Consider inspecting and/or cleaning the reservoir. |
