Details: | SUMMARY: Control and Automation Assistance DETAILS: System owns and operates a community water system in an area north of Florence. The system is composed of a distribution system, lake pump station, sand filtration plant and a variety of booster pump stations and storage tanks. The lake station and the filtration plant are at two sites and controls signals connect the two through a radio link. Automatic plant operations and alarms are dependent on the telemetry signals. Recently the system contacted HBH to request help in evaluating the system for including six of the remote sites into the SCADA system. The remote sites are currently monitored by daily visits to each site. Increased demand on the water system is making the daily visits inadequate because if the pumping station has an equipment failure, water storage levels can become dangerously low before the problem is discovered. This has become a severe concern. The system requested help in evaluating each site for the telemetry prospects and in developing a strategy for future improvements. I visited the sites and spoke to the operator about the problem, studied the plant control schematics and inspected the existing telemetry components. I obtained GPS coordinates of each site and tested all possible radio links for terrain conflicts using topographical data. I provided a report to the system which offers recommendations for a telemetry plan that could solve the problem. ACTION NEEDED: Answer questions generated by the report. |
