Details: | SUMMARY: Treatment Assistance DETAILS: The city owns and operates a surface water treatment plant and distribution system that supplies water to homes and business’s. The City requested help after several days of inability to produce treated water that met drinking water standards. It appeared that the plant was being overdosed. Jar tests indicated that the plant should operate over a wide range of alum doses but work at 15 ppm. At full scale the plant still did not make floc and appeared to be overdosed at a wide range of doses. On Sunday a new operator noticed that the flow of water through the plant was not as high as the flow meter indicated. A slight increase on the SCADA system appeared to double the flow through the plant, as roughly measured in a trough leading to the filters. The plant was set to normal doses and the overdose condition cleared up and the plant was able to produce treated water after several hours of filtering to waste. It would appear the problem was a combination of the low flow and a large does of cationic polymer. City staff does an excellent job operating their plant using historical data. They have an opportunity to improve this strategy by improving record keeping and learning to jar test. I have advised them of ways to improve their record keeping. ACTION NEEDED: None |
