Details: | SUMMARY: main break and mercury in well DETAILS: During some sewer repairs in sellwood today, a water main was broken. about 8 customers are out of water. they will be replacing the water main, shocking, and collecting bactis before putting it back in service (following the BMP protocol). She thought the media may pick up the story. they have installed above-ground temporary water services for those customers. at first Yone said they use some sort of hose and I questioned her further on that to see if customers were told the water was ok to drink. she said they did not give any precautionary advisory, and she assumed the material etc of the piping is all ok. I advised her to verify that. She also said the the mercury clean-up in well 14 is wrapping up. Their water quality goal is less than half the MCL. After they plugged the bottom of the well and purged it, they tested the water at various depths in the column. It still showed near the MCL. Yone asked about regulatory issues, and I told her since there are many wells on the entry point, our regulations only require testing at the entry point as long as it is representative of all sources used. They plan to do a maintenance run on the wellfield, but well #14 will not be used. I advised them to collect mercury samples from that well at least quarterly to see if there is any variation. ACTION NEEDED: wells will be run for maintenance august 18-25. |
