Details: | SUMMARY: Naphthalene found in distribution system DETAILS: Last night 12/14 pm Portland Water Bureau (PWB) began getting complaints about a petroleum or mothball odor in the distribution. Overall they received 22 complaints. The area was between NE 117th and 127th, between Glisan and Holladay streets. There have been no complaints since 11 am today. VOC samples were taken both pre and post flushing. Results came back showing a presence of naphthalene. The highest sample was 64 ppb, with several other samples in the 1-5 ppb range. 5 sets of pre- and post- flushing samples were taken. The post flushing sample of the highest result is not back from the lab yet. The source of the contamination is not known. An investigation will begin tomorrow. There was no loss of pressure in the area at the time. There was a similar incident involving naphthalene in january 2010 in the same area, but that cause of that was never discovered. EPA recommends children do no drink water with more than 0.5 ppm naphthalene, so 0.064 ppm well below that advisory. ACTION NEEDED: PWB will be putting out a press release and will begin investigating the source. Flushing in the area is continuing. |
